Algae grows where light reaches the nutrient solution. Green slime on the walls of the reservoir or channels is a sign that light is getting in.
How to Stop It
- Use an opaque reservoir, and cover any gaps where light enters.
- Cover channels and net cups where possible.
- Clean the reservoir and change the solution when algae builds up.
Why It Matters
Algae competes with plants for nutrients and oxygen, and it can clog pumps and tubing. Keeping light out of the solution is the main fix.
