Who We Are

411 Hydroponic Gardening is an independent website about growing plants in water instead of soil. We grow hydroponically ourselves and write down what works, in plain language, so you can get the information you need (the "411") without wading through jargon.

The site covers hydroponics as a whole: passive methods such as Kratky and wick systems, and active systems such as deep water culture, nutrient film technique, ebb and flow and drip. We are not a store or an equipment brand.

What We Cover

Each topic gets a plain explanation of how it works, what it needs and where people usually go wrong.

Hydroponic Systems

How Kratky, wick, deep water culture, NFT, ebb and flow and drip systems work, and how to choose one.

Nutrients and pH

Mixing a nutrient solution, measuring pH and EC, and knowing when to top up or change it.

Light, Plants and Problems

Lighting, which plants suit hydroponics, and what to do about root rot, algae and yellow leaves.

Who This Site Is For

Growers at Every Stage

First-Time Growers

If you have never grown without soil, start with the basics: what hydroponics is, the simplest systems, and what you need to buy.

Growers Ready for More

If you already grow in a jar or a tote and want a bigger or more automated setup, compare active systems and learn to manage nutrients and pH.
