A Kratky system grows plants in a container of nutrient solution with no pump. The plant sits in a net cup above the water, and its roots grow down into the solution.
The Air Gap
As the plant drinks, the water level drops. The exposed upper roots take in air, which is how the roots get oxygen without a pump.
What It Needs
- An opaque container so light does not reach the solution.
- A nutrient solution mixed to the fertilizer label, with a pH that suits the crop.
- Enough light for the crop, usually a grow light indoors.
Limits
Kratky works best with leafy greens and herbs. Larger plants need more solution and more light, and the system needs more management.
